#bilingual : Music Service Spotify Recruits Barack Obama

Bilingual adalah berita dua bahasa yang akan membantu Bujang Dare untuk mempelajari dan lebih memahami Bahasa Inggris. Serta menambah wawasan dunia tentang berbagai informasi dan berita masa kini. Untuk hari ini sebuah topik telah dipilih khusus untuk Bujang Dare.

Music Service Spotify Recruits Barack Obama
(Layanan Music Spotify Merekrut Barack Obama)

Barack Obama gave his final speech as President of the United States. His final day in office is Friday, January 20. That is the day that Donald Trump will be sworn in as America’s 45th president. The Obama family plans to continue living in Washington, D.C. while younger daughter Sasha finishes high school. But what will the former president do with his time?

(Barack Obama memberikan pidato terkahirnya sebagai Presiden Amerika. Hari terkahirnya bertugas adalah hari Jum’at, tanggal 20 Januari. Hari itu adalah hari dimana Donald Trump akan diambil sumpahnya sebagai Presiden Amerika yang ke 45. Keluarga Obama berencana untuk tetap tinggal di Washington D.C. sementara anak bungsu mereka Sasha menyelesaikan SMA. Namun apa yang akan dilakukan mantan presiden sehabis tugasnya?)

Some observers think Obama will get to work helping the Democratic Party find new candidates who can win local elections in 2018. Obama said in 2015 that he might go back to working on issues similar to those he worked on before he got involved in politics. Before he became a state senator in Illinois, he helped poor communities in Chicago.

(Beberapa orang mengira Obama akan bekerja membantu Partai Demokrat menemukan kandidat-kandidat baru yang bisa memenangkan pemilihan daerah di tahun 2018. Obama berkata di tahun 2015 bahwa dia mungkin akan kembali bekerja di bidang yang sama dengan yang dia lakukan sebelum terlibat di dunia politik. Sebelum dia menjadi senat di Illinois, dia membantu komunitas masyarakat tidak mampu di Chicago.)

But, in case Obama changes his mind, the popular music streaming service Spotify seems to have a job for him.The music service published a job posting for a “President of Playlists.” Some of requirements for the job are very specific. Obama is likely the only person in the world who is qualified for the job. The job requirements include having had singer Kendrick Lamar perform at a birthday party. Lamar, Obama and Janelle Monae all sang “Happy Birthday” to Obama’s daughter Malia in 2016. Another requirement is eight years of “running a highly-regarded nation.” Spotify also says the applicants must have a Nobel Peace Prize. The listing also mentions being one of the “greatest speakers of all time.”

(Namun, jika Obama berubah pikiran, layanan pemutar music online terkenal Spotify sepertinya mempunyai pekerjaan untuknya.

Many people enjoyed Obama’s summer music playlists he created last August. His playlists included artists like Miles Davis, Aloe Blacc and Leon Bridges. The founder of Spotify is Daniel Ek of Sweden. He tweeted the job listing. He wrote: “Hey Barack Obama, I heard you were interested in a role at Spotify. Have you seen this one?” The message was liked and retweeted almost 20,000 times. One person said she would sign-up for Spotify if Obama came to work for the service.

–Michael Buble pulls out of hosting BRIT Awards to care for his son Noah as he battles cancer

Canadian superstar Michael Buble has pulled out of hosting the BRIT Awards next month to care for his eldest son Noah, who is battling liver cancer .

The chart-topping singer cancelled all work commitments last year following three-year-old Noah’s devastating diagnosis in November but was still expected to make his presenting debut at the ceremony. But BRITs bosses held their first planning meeting ahead of the bash at London’s O2 Arena on February 22 and were told they need to find a new host.

Doctors have given toddler Noah 90% chance of survival and he is currently undergoing chemotherapy with Michael and his actress wife Luisana Lopilato by his side. The couple have a second son Elias, who will celebrate his first birthday on Sunday. A source said: “It is a delicate situation due to the nature of Noah’s illness. No pressure was ever put on Michael to fulfil his obligations.

“He will always be welcome at the BRITs but it’s important that he is with his family. It would not look good to be singing and dancing on stage while his son is so ill.” The race is now on to find a replacement presenter for the annual star-studded bash, which will be shown live on ITV1 and include performances from Little Mix and Emeli Sande, 29.

–Ed Sheeran Creates Chart History Down Under

Ed Sheeran has made history Down Under by becoming the first artist to have simultaneous debuts at No. 1 and No. 2 on the ARIA Singles Chart, while three soundtracks manage a feat never seen before on the national albums chart.

Sheeran sets a new record with “Shape Of You” (Asylum/Warner) and “Castle On The Hill” (Atlantic/Warner), respectively, which earn the solo star a return to the market’s top 50 as a lead artist for the first time since “Photograph” cracked the top 10 back in June 2015.
“Shape Of You” becomes the English singer’s third No. 1 on the national singles chart, after “Sing” (May 2014) and “Thinking Out Loud” (October 2014).

“Shape Of You” and “Castle On The Hill” have now done the double-double. The tracks are also No. 1 and No. 2 in the U.K., and “Shape of You” is set to blow into the Billboard Hot 100 chart, possibly with a debut at No. 1 (with “Castle on the Hill” shaping for a top 10 bow). The two new songs dropped Jan. 6 ahead of Sheeran’s forthcoming third album album ÷ (pronounced “Divide”), due March 3.

Favorite Place I’ve Travelled To

Recently I changed my bio on my Facebook account from “a lucky wife blablabla” into “an adventerous woman who trapped in a homebody-person”. I am still a lucky wife, for sure. Only I am not really confident to proclaim myself as a traveller that’s why the recent bio sounds paradox.

A traveller, if I may define, should at least have travelled to 10 different cities, 5 different countries, 50 different places, and dare to do the travel solo. Me? I have only visited 4 other countries than Indonesia, less than 10 cities outside Pontianak, and not really sure if I would be okay wandering around any city all by myself. Other reason behind the paradox-bio is because most of my days, I feel like I am having a sedentary lifestyle but on the other hand, I am also eager to go outside to have an adventure to enhance my adrenaline.

So far, as I mentioned, besides Indonesia, I (only) have visited 4 different countries: Singapore, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, and Thailand. Cities (either it’s big or small city) I’ve visited besides Pontianak are Sintang, Sekadau, Singkawang, Bandung, Semarang, Jogja, and Jakarta. Oh my gosh, almost 30 years living in this world and I went nowhere 😢

On the way to Masjidil Haram

However, at least not literally “nowhere”. Among those countries and cities I’ve visited, I have favorite places on my list. Can you guess what? True! Masjidil Haram and Masjid Nabawi. It was in 2013 when I and my husband had a chance to do umroh. As a moslem, I felt *and still feel* very excited and so lucky to be able to put my foot down the places where Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) also had put his steps there. When I first saw the ka’bah, it was so indescribable. I was happily crying. Not all human beings even not all moslems are given the chance to directly see the best world wander. I felt so blessed.

Not only the chance to do umroh that we got when visiting Mecca and Madina, but also the chance to improve our English. For real. Even in the land where Arabian language is spoken, English is also very useful for me and my husband. We used English to communicate with some people from other countries like India, Jordan, and Egypt. Although it was not a long and deep talk, but at least English helped us for certain things when we were there. There’s no harm at all speaking English in Arab countries 😄

Well, until the moment I typed this posting, I do really wanna be back there again, to do hajj. Insya Allah one day I will. With my husband.

I think no other place could beat the vibe of happiness I got during visiting those two places. I hope I will add more cities and countries to visit after posting this post. Especially other cities in Indonesia that I haven’t been to before.

So I guess, this is it. See you on my next posting 😉

English Idiom

image

This posting is not my own writing, yet I found this useful article after sending questionnaire for my small scale research in regards to the use of English language in weblogs entries. Therefore, I decide to post it to my blog after being so long time I didn’t publish anything here hehehe. Here’s the article. Enjoy!

Ø Lexemic idiom
The meaning of lexemic idiom is idiom which collate with the familiar part of speech (Boatnar and Gate, 1975: v). Lexemic idiom is form of idiom which indicated a specific class of grammatical word, and an idiom can be nominal, adjective, verb or adverb.

Based on the classification of grammatical word class, lexemic idioms are distinguished based on Boather and Gate theory. There are 3 kinds of lexemic idioms, they are: Verbal idiom, Nominal idiom and Adjectival idiom.

Ø Verbal Idiom
Verbal idioms are kind of idioms which have class of verb as in sentence.

¤ I’d tie on my backhand look at the cloud passing by.
The meaning of look at in the sentence above is to turn your eyes toward something, the other italic which is passing by means to move pass or go pass for a person, person, thing etc.

¤ Don’t let your imagination, run away with you.
The sentence above consist a verbal idiom which marked by the italic words, it means to control.

¤ We could longer agree, I had to break with her.
The sentence break above doesn’t mean to break or crack or destroy something or somebody, but the underlined break means to end a connection or relationship with.

Ø Nominal Idioms
The second kind of verbal idioms is nominal idiom. Based on its definition, nominal idiom is the idioms which have a nominal word class (noun) and usually appeared as nominal phrase which forms idiomatic meaning. Later, it could be explained below:

¤ My father is a man with a few words. He doesn’t really want to state his opinion.

The explanation of italic words above is a man who does not talk very much.

The witness has been received a sum of harsh money for his no talk in the assembly.

Italic words above is a nominal idiom, it can be translated as money paid to prevent some shameful fact which can be known in the public.

¤ The employees have done some dirty work to make a benefit for their selves.
Some dirty work can be interpreted as dishonest or unfaithful work even can be said done a corruption.

Ø Adjectival Idioms
A word or sentence can be said as adjectival idiom if it has adjectival class. Furthermore, the explanation of this idiom can be showed in the sentence as follows:

¤ I can stand myself to wear these clothes anymore; this dress trend is out of date.

The out of date mean is no longer fashionable or exist.

¤ The girl is so surprise and directly glance up the coming sound whose call her name.

The underlined words which are glance up means look quickly.

¤ Minoz is an all around athlete, he talents soccer, badminton, and the others kinds of sports.

All around is an idiom which means doing good in many different things, especially at many different sports.

Ø Phrase Logical Idioms
This idiom type is idioms that do not readily correlate with a given grammatical part of speech and required a paraphrase longer than a word. Often they are in entire clause in length (Boather and Gate, 1975: V1)
From the plain explanation above, it can be conclude that phrase logic idiom is idiom which connects to the grammatical word class indirectly a need paraphrase. It often consist one clause. Moreover, it would be explained below:

¤ I was on my mind when the bells blew my brains out.
Italic sentence which written blew my brains out above means to kill myself by shooting in the head.

¤ After having a brilliant position in office, Danny finally able to keep his head above water.
Words in italic which is keep his head above water means that to earn enough money to remain out of debt.

¤ The new raising actor has a talent to make a noise in the world.
The sentence make a noise in the world refer to its closest meaning, and it can be mean o become famous.

Ø Saying and Proverb
These saying and proverb are the last kind of idiom. Nevertheless, it has to be explained clearly, and below are some of the examples of it.

¤ Because of his lack of knowledge, the building staff quarrelers his tools.

From the sentence above, the researcher would like to give a bit description about the using of saying and proverb idiom. The italic sentence means that building staff tries to excuse his lack of knowledge or his stupidity by blaming the tools for poor workmanship.

¤ Tommy is one of my relative whom came from village. He is a country cousin.

The italic words above means that Tommy was a simple and average person.

Moreover Boather and Gate’s theory is strengthened by the theory of Denoun which famous by his article entitle “kind of idioms” (1976). For clear information in http://www.wikipedia.com, he classifies idioms into five kinds. The explanations follow:

¤ Lexemic Idioms
In the first explanation of this research, the researcher can simply say that there is an interesting fact about idioms that they are can be easily to identify, especially when we are analysis it in the part of speech. Idioms can sometimes be seen in verbal nature such as get up, look out, watch out, turn off, hold on etc. Later, it also can be found in nominal nature like hot dog (Frankfurter originally food) which serves as a noun. Last, it can also provide as adjectives and also adverbial.

¤ Idiomatic pairs

There are many kinds of pairs in English, it can be followed by word of and. In the next explanation, idiomatic pairs can be found in the adverb forms, noun forms, identical/prepositional forms, adjectives forms, verb forms.
Some common noun pairs and adverb pairs are peace and quite, body and soul, life and limb, grin and bear. The example of adverbial pairs and adjectival pairs are here and there, short and sweet, sick and tired. And the instance for identical/prepositional pairs is on and on, around up, little by little, all in all.

¤ Proverbial Idioms
In his theory, Denoun also include proverbial as one of many idiom kinds. I wish to get up earlier so I can begin my day with a flying star. And then I know it’s said barking dogs seldom bite but a man can’t be too careful.

¤ One-Word Idioms
It can be said as one-word idioms when we find a word with an extreme different meaning from the original meaning of the selected word. Such as (apple) he has an apple laptop. Idiom can be meant in general because the meaning of idiom can not be understood just each individual word.
